     The 2016 US Youth Fly Fishing Team National Championship will be held June 24-26, 2016 in State College, PA.  Over the course of two competition days, anglers will have an opportunity to fish the famed Spring Creek, covering 2 very different water types as well as the Little Juniata (“j”).  There will also be a Lake venue. For many anglers this will be a new opportunity to expand their knowledge as well as  prepare for the World competition. Please note that all attendees must have completed one USYFFT, Inc. sponsored clinic prior to applying for the Nationals.

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENTS

1. Lodging
We have negotiated a special package at the Ramada Inn, State College PA. They have given us a great rate and the Draw Presentation and catered Awards Banquet will be hosted at that location.  In addition to that if you (competitors only) require transportation to the venues it will depart from the Ramada.
Rooms have 2 queen beds, table and 2 chairs for tying area, small fridge and microwave. Youth competitors can pair up, can have rooms to themselves, stay with parents or parents can stay as well at that rate. We have the block of rooms from 22-27 June (22-24 is for practice and 27th is for those traveling to have an extra day to depart).
– Directions: Guests will call the hotel direct at 814-238-3001 to make your reservations for the US Youth Fly Fishing Event. 
-When making the reservations, please make sure to mention the US Fly fishing Youth Event (group code:CG22UA) to receive the discounted rate of $75, plus tax before June 8th.
2. Transportation
If your youth angler needs transportation to and from the venues then Team Manager, Kalvin Kaloz, needs to know as soon as possible and NO LATER THAN the end of the business day on Monday, June 6th.

Registration will run through www.flycomps.com most of you are aware of this process but for those who are not; have your angler sign up for a fly comps account (it’s free).  You will get a separate email telling you when Registration opens. The owner of that site is running and fishing in the adult Nationals being held in Lake Placid, NY this weekend.  The Team Manager will be working with him and expects the registration to be fully functional on Monday, June 6th or sooner.  At that point,  you will ALL get the registration dates and instructions. Until then these items below are still being finalized and will be communicated as soon as possible:

  • Event Competitor-Controlled format competition
  • Draw presentation will be on Friday June 24th located at the Ramada Inn, State College PA
    • ALL of the rules and format questions will be answered in detail
    • Beats, parking and locations will be discussed and areas where parents will be best able to see
  • Fishing two sessions on Saturday June 25th and two sessions on Sunday June 26th
  • There will be a catered Awards Dinner on Sunday after the event but for anyone who wants to meet back at the Ramada where the results will be announced and winners will receive medals.

NOTE: 32 competitors will be accepted and notified. Anglers will have 72 hours from confirmation of entry to submit their registration fee.
If you fail to submit your registration fee, you will lose your spot to the next angler on the list.

Competition Information:

  • Limited to 32 anglers, Competitor-Controlled
  • Event Registration, Auto Draw, and Scoring will take place using FlyComps.com
  • This event is planned to be 3 rivers and 1 lake ccompetition.

Venues: (Fishing will take place at the following locations):

Upper Spring Creek, Benner Spring Section: Benner Spring Hatchery, PA Permitted Area: is 1.5 miles upstream of the large parking lot just below Benner Hatchery

Lower Spring Creek, Milesburg Section: Milesburg, PA Permitted Area: is 1.5 miles upstream of the confluence of Bald Eagle River (town of Milesburg, PA)

Little Juniata River: Spruce Creek PA Permitted Area: the Bridge that crosses the river in the town of Spruce Creek, upstream 1.5 miles

Lake Perez: Stone Valley Recreation Area Permitted Area: 72 acre lake with rented row boats

Back Up Venues: There are no back Up Venues and we still need the 2 SC permits CAO:30 May. The Youth Board and Coach and Manager have a plan if permits or water conditions would prevent Nations, very doubtful!

Practice water:

  • River competition venues are closed to fishing by competitors starting on June 8th, 2016 and the Lake will remain open through the 23rd of June.
  • Practice water is open to any of the areas not mentioned above.

The 2015 US Youth Fly Fishing Team National Championship will be held June 19-21, 2015 in Cherokee, NC.  Over the course of two competition days, anglers will have an opportunity to fish the famed Nantahala River as well as the trophy and general waters of the Raven’s Fork of the Occonaluftee.

Please note that all attendees must have completed one USYFFT, Inc. sponsored clinic prior to applying for the Nationals.

Additional Information and Logistics

Lodging for Competitors

The Quality Inn located on 441 By-Pass has set aside approximately 15-20 “suites” at a rate of $119.00 per night.  These rooms have a kitchenette, two double beds, and an office/tying area.  The hotel is approximately 1/4 mile from the fly shop.

Vans will depart from the Quality Inn each morning for rendezvous at the fly shop.  Anglers not staying at the Quality Inn will need to arrange their own transportation to the shop.

Lodging for Parents

The Quality Inn has a limited number of king size rooms for $109.00 per night.  In addition, there are numerous lodging options in the city of Cherokee, nearby Bryson City, and the Nantahala Outdoor Center (NOC).

Sector 1:  
Any tribal waters located downstream of the Trophy (Catch and Release) Section of the Raven’s Fork of the Occonaluftee
Sector 2:  Any tribal waters located downstream of the Trophy (Catch and Release) Section of the Raven’s Fork of the Occonaluftee
Sector 3:  From Big Wesser Falls to Little Wesser Falls, located on or near the campus of the NOC (Nantahala Outdoor Center) and any waters upstream of the bridges located on Winding Stairs Road, ending at the Powerhouse Confluence on Wayah Road
Sector 4:  Any waters located upstream of the intersection of Wayah Road and Old River Road

Licenses
Sectors 1 and 2:

Dinner shall be provided to all anglers at the Sunday evening Awards Ceremony.  Additional persons (family members, friends, etc.) may purchase meal tickets for $30.00.  Please send payment in advance to:  Christopher Smith, 3402 Richards Crossing, Fort Mill, SC 29708.  All checks should be made payable to the U.S. Youth Fly Fishing Team, Inc.

Towards the end of dinner, doors will open for the Awards Ceremony so that any and all can attend.

Transportation

Angler Packets
Each angler will receive an angler packet which will include all the information and material they will need for the event.  An event T-Shirt will be made for every angler registered before June 10th, featuring the event logos and sponsors.

Scoring
Youth anglers will be scored using two systems.

For the Team USA Youth Nationals, youth anglers will  be scored against youth registered as competitors via the forms above.
For the CNY Classic, youth anglers will be scored against all competitors (youth and adult).

It is possible (and historically speaking quite likely) that a youth competitor will medal in both events!
