Additional information for the Clinic

Each angler should plan to bring the following items.  Please contact the event lead (Brian Kimmel) with specific questions.

  • Appropriate clothing
  • Fly rod for lakes – This clinic will focus primarily on lake fishing.  A 10 ft 6wt to 7wt is the competition standard, but a 9 ft or longer rod in the 5wt – 7wt category will work.
  • Fly rod for rivers – Anglers may wish to bring a competition nymphing rod should time on the rivers become possible.
  • Lines – At a minimum, anglers should bring a  floating line in the appropriate weight.  Simply know that there are a variety of lake lines with specific purposes and sink rates…far too many to outline here.  If you have them, bring them.  Otherwise, we’ll outline uses for each at the clinic.
  • Chest waders
  • Chest Pack or Vest
  • Polarized Sunglasses (to see the fish and for eye protection)
  • Flies – a selection of lake flies, dry flies, nymphs, and streamers.   Please note – we will work on fly selection at the clinic and time will be dedicated to tying lake specific patterns.  No need to panic here.
  • Tapered leaders – some 9’ 3x,4x, and 5x factory tapered leaders are a good place to start.
  • Tippet – 3x through 6X fluorocarbon tippet.  We suggest Trout Hunter or RIO Products brands.
  • Hat- for sun protection and helping with spotting fish.
  • Rain Coat / Wading Jacket
  • Ne
  • Bug Spray
  • Sun Screen
  • Fly Tying equipment and materials encouraged but not required
  • Montana Fishing License
