January 2017 Coaching Updates

Effective December 31, 2016 the USYFFT, Inc., received and accepted the resignation of Christopher Smith as Head Coach. The Youth Team has been fortunate to have had Christopher Smith in that position, which he assumed after serving the Team as Assistant Coach in 2013. In 2013, the US Team won Team Gold and Individual Gold in Ireland in the FIPS-Mouche World Youth Fly Fishing Championships, and went on to win the gold in the prestigious America Cup Fly Fishing Competition, remaining undefeated. In 2014 it was gold in Poland, and in 2015, it was gold in the US based international competition in Vail, Colorado. There the Youth Team won its third consecutive gold medal, as well as gold and silver individual medals. In 2016, Christopher Smith and the Team brought home another medal win, silver, from Spain.

John Ford, President, USYFFT, Inc., with concurrence from Walter Ungerman, Chairman of the Board, USYFFT, Inc., has approved Kalvin Kaloz to succeed Christopher Smith as Head Coach and Ken Crane to assume the duties of Team Manager, effective January 1, 2017. In addition, Christopher and Kalvin have recommended a regional coach structure to help with the demands of a growing organization. The following individuals have been appointed: Josh Miller, Northeast regional coach; Gordon Vanderpool, Southeast regional coach; Brian Kimmel, Western regional coach. Ken Crane has accepted the position of Team Manager. This structure should benefit the youth anglers and the organization by having expertise in each area, dedicated logistical support, and coordination. Each individual brings demonstrated skills, both in the sport and the organization, that will be assets to the Team.

Team USA Youth wishes continued success to Christopher as he moves on to his new challenges and welcomes Kalvin and Ken as they assume their new duties.
