Gordon Vanderpool is owner and head guide of Turning Stones Fly Fishing LLC based in Franklin, NC. He was raised in southwestern Pennsylvania, which is where he fell in love with the art of fly fishing. He has been lucky enough to fly fish all over the country, and several parts of the world in his fly fishing career. Shortly after moving to western North Carolina in 2007, Gordon became a member of the NC Fly Fishing Team He found instant success while competing, and knew that this was going to be something that would be apart of his life and career from that point forward. After several years of competing and quite a few 1st place finishes in competitions, his business, Turning Stones Fly Fishing, began to take off to a level that would keep him too busy to focus and practice to compete at a high level. It was at that point that Gordon decided to retire as a competitive angler and focus on the business.
During that transition, he and fellow competitor, Paul Bourcq, started to really work with some of the young talent in the area. Soon after that, Paul became head coach of the US Youth Fly Fishing Team and Gordon served right by his side as an assistant coach. Many years have passed since then, and Gordon is looked upon as a mentor and coach for many adult and youth competitive anglers trying to gain some steam in the sport. In the last few years, Gordon has built a strong reputation in the sport and has become known for having an excellent eye for identifying young talent. He possesses a very unique and productive coaching style which results in making competitive anglers better. Recently, Gordon is very proud to have been named southeast regional coach for the the US Youth Team. Gordon has seen first hand how far this team has come over the years. He looks forward to the future and being part of building championship level anglers!
