Kalvin “K2” Kaloz became the USYFFT Head Coach in January 2017. At age 14 Kalvin was introduced to fly fishing through an organization called Family Ties. It was an after school program with the goal to provide life-long, positive alternatives to the negative influences of drugs and alcohol, especially those found in urban areas. This was done by organizing year-round activities which promote family values, volunteerism, educational processes and life skills development. For him, the next four years proved to be very formative and life changing. “I would go as far as to say that if not for that program and a few key volunteers I would not be the man I am today!” He was “hooked” and continues to be to this very day.
In 2009, he learned of a new form of fly fishing which was one that he did not know even existed: competitive fly fishing. The combination of passion for the art of fly fishing and fly tying, combined with the competitiveness and determination it takes to have consistent success, opened a whole new world of fly fishing. These events only fueled his desire. Following the advice of a few well known competition anglers/mentors, he jumped in with both feet and has yet to look back.
As one of the founding members of the Trout Legend (TL) League, Kalvin feels it’s been an honor to be one of the selected few who spent countless hours and energy to create and grow the first Competitive Fly Fishing League in North America. One learns very quickly in this sport that an individual only goes so far; he is a proud member and Co-Captain of Team FreeStone, one of the truly dominant teams in the TL League. His desire to be the best fly fisherman and develop the best team has led to travel and competitions at the regional, national and international levels. In addition to competing, constantly trying to expand personal knowledge and skill, and leading an elite regional team, he has taken on the role of host and tournament organizer for both TL and Adult/Youth Team USA regional events.
Kalvin has reached a point in life where he feels that he has enough time, energy, knowledge, experience, and skill to give back, mentor, lead and manage The United States Youth Fly Fishing Team, which is the world’s premier youth competitive fly fishing team. K2 was honored to be the 2016 Team Manager and now succeeds Christopher Smith as Head Coach in 2017. He has enjoyed the various opportunities with the Team which included the highlight of participating in the World Youth Fly Fishing championships, 2015, which were held in Vail, Colorado. There he was able to see firsthand the intensity, commitment, and energy it requires of both the participants and the coaches. While serving as Team Manager in 2016, Kalvin proudly stated, “Chris and I will lead the three-time World Champs in Spain for the 2016 WYFFC.”
