Ken Crane began his journey in the competitive fly fishing world in 2011 while competing as a fill-in for the US National Fly Fishing Championship in Cherokee, NC. After that event, Ken was mentored by past youth coach and longtime angler on the adult team, Loren Williams, exploring all the realms of the competitive fly fishing world and the techniques and strategies that go into a successful angler. During this time Ken took his passion for technical processes to help further the competitive scene in the US bringing forth more efficient formats, team style event and scoring systems. His latest project is creating a web based application to streamline the competition fly fishing worldwide and it is being used by numerous organizers while still in its development.
Ken began to host events early on. A yearly competition called the CNY Classic which is now in its 6th year and is one of the marquee events in the US. He hosted the US Youth Fly Fishing Team National Championship in 2014, the Adult National Championship in 2016, five adult regional events and countless 1 and 2 day competitions.
Ken has qualified for every US National Championship since starting down this path. He made the adult team in 2013 and has retained his spot since. He became a member of the regional team, Freestone, in 2014. He is also a member of the adult team leadership committee and was a key person in developing and bringing competitor controlled regionals for the adult circuit. He will continue to compete at a high level with larger goals in the pipeline.
With his passion for technical systems, administrative process and a deep understanding of what it takes to become a top angler he is excited in this new chapter as the US Youth Fly Fishing Team Manager and is looking forward to working with Head Coach, Kalvin Kaloz, and the rest of the team Kalvin has put in place to further carry on and advance the youth team.
