Will McDonough – Colorado

Will McDonough first began fishing when he was three, begging his dad to take him to local ponds to spin fish for bluegill and bass. He was first introduced to fly-fishing when his dad bought him his first fly rod for his 12th birthday and took him to a fly fishing introductory class to learn how to cast. On a guided trip in Jackson Hole, Wyoming while floating the Snake River, he instantly fell in love with the rewarding feeling of catching trout on a fly. He began Euro-nymphing at age 13 when he attended his first USYFFT clinics in Pennsylvania and Montana and quickly discovered the tactical advantages of this technical style of fly-fishing.  As he says, “At that point, fly fishing transformed from a hobby to a passion.  I spend all my free time pursuing trout on the Eagle, Colorado, Gunnison and South Platte Rivers and, most frequently, Clear Creek. I realize how blessed I am to have these great fisheries right on my front door step here in Colorado.”

When asked what he most looks forward to as part of Team USA Youth he says, “I am most excited to be part of a team where others share my passion and devotion for fly-fishing. I believe that the best aspect of being on the team is the opportunity to work and learn from my coaches and Team USA Youth teammates. My coaches and peers are will mcdonough3among the best fly fishermen in the world and I have a lot to learn from them. Since my first clinic in the spring of 2015, I have absorbed more than I could have ever imagined. It is an honor and privilege that I get to represent the USA through this great sport. I enjoy competing and hope to attend as many comps as I can during high school. I am extremely thankful for the coaches and this fantastic group of young men that push me to be a better angler on the daily.”

Will sees himself as working hard at fly-fishing through high school and hope to eventually compete in World’s. After he graduates in three years from Faith Christian Academy, he plans to attend college and fish in his free time. During the summers, he would like to guide. His long-term dream is to compete on the USA men’s fly fishing team.

Will says, “I hope to share the gift of conservation awareness, my passion for fly tying, and the sport of fly fishing with others.”
